Kano Emirship Crisis: A Tale Of Two Emirs

The tussle for the Kano emirship has intensified, with Aminu Ado Bayero and Lamido Sanusi both laying claim to the throne, each operating from different palaces.

Lamido Sanusi, reinstated by the state government, has taken residence at the main Kano emir’s palace. Meanwhile, Aminu Ado Bayero, deposed by the same government, is stationed at the mini palace in Nassarawa GRA, Kano city.

The crisis escalated when Ado Bayero unexpectedly returned to Kano on Saturday, shortly after Sanusi's formal reinstatement. Sanusi has since been receiving greetings and homages from district heads, making a grand entrance to the chamber on horseback amidst gun salutes from palace guards. Hundreds of supporters from the New Nigeria People Party (NNPP) have been bused to the main palace to show their allegiance.

Tensions are high as federal authorities allegedly plan to relocate Ado Bayero back to the palace, despite a court order halting his deposition. Security agencies have urged the state government to comply with the court's directive, which maintains the status quo until the interim injunction hearing on June 3.

Ado Bayero, addressing his supporters at the mini palace, called for calm and respect for the law, expressing confidence that justice would prevail. "Nobody is above the law," he asserted, emphasizing the need for fairness and justice.

The Kano State Deputy Governor, Aminu Abdulsalam, has blamed the chaos on former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, accusing him of using the office of the National Security Adviser to create tension. However, Ganduje's spokesperson denied any involvement, attributing the unrest to political maneuvering.

As the court date approaches, Kano remains on edge, with both emirs urging their supporters to remain peaceful. The resolution of this conflict will have significant implications for the region, reflecting the deep-seated political and social dynamics at play.

Stay tuned as we continue to follow this unfolding story and its impact on Kano and beyond.
