Davido, the Nigerian-American singer/songwriter/producer, has consistently embraced his African roots throughout his career. From his debut album "Omo Baba Olowo" in 2012, paying homage to the Yoruba people, to organizing the inaugural A.W.A.Y Festival last November, his cultural pride is evident.
The significance of Davido's first-ever GRAMMY nominations is heightened as he contends for three awards, including the inaugural category dedicated to African music. Sharing the Best African Music Performance Category with talents like Ayra Starr, Tyla, Burna Boy, ASAKE & Olamide, Davido's nominated track, "UNAVAILABLE," produced with Musa Keys, soared to No. 3 on the Billboard U.S. Afrobeats Songs chart in 2023.
In an email to GRAMMY.com, Davido expressed, "It feels incredible to be a part of history. Hopefully, there are more African categories added in the future." Notably, Davido's influence extends beyond the Best African Music Performance Category, as his work is recognized in the Best Global Music Album and Best Global Music Performance Categories. His fourth album, "Timeless," earns a nomination in the former, while the sultry track "FEEL" represents him in the latter.
As the GRAMMYs embrace the diversity of global music, Davido stands at the forefront, leaving an indelible mark on the recognition of African talent on this prestigious platform.
